Simple Personal Rustic & Home Made Wedding with a Great Bake Off -...

With a love for cooking and a ceremony hosted at the home of the Great British Bake Off ( Harptree Court in Somerset) it was only fitting that Ed and Kate held The Great Wedding Bake Off at their reception.

They were married on the 13 th September 2014 and chose the The Old School Rooms for their wedding party, which they decorated beautifully. I adore the DIY Dahlia blooms, the reams of bunting and the hessian table runners, gorgeous!

Kate wore a figure hugging Suzanne Neville gown from Carina Baverstock with classic veil, while Ed's suit was a Reiss sale bargain. Autumnal wedding goodness and scrumptious cakes... perfect.

Thanks today goes to Kevin Belson for providing these divine photographs.

THE PROPOSAL | Ed proposed to Kate on the day they exchanged contracts on their first house together. It was late November and we'd had the good news on the house right at the end of a stressful week. To celebrate, we took the dog out for walk together and headed up to the Clifton Downs (Bristol) which overlook the Clifton Suspension Bridge. It's one of our favourite places to go and this is when Ed popped the question.

THE VISION | We really wanted to create an intimate wedding - something that allowed us to really make the most of a day with our friends and family. We love the North Somerset countryside, the Chew Valley, the Mendips... so we hoped to find a setting that gave our guests a feel for the areas we love. To tie in with this, we tried to keep the overall feel quite simple, personal rustic. We wanted to control as many elements ourselves, so choosing venues that gave us lots of flexibility to do things our way was really important to us.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had a week off work in the January, and many of the core elements of the wedding were sorted in that week!

They say you should set your top three priorities, so for us it was the venue, the food and the music. Ed had already found the Old School Rooms in Chew Magna which could make a great reception venue, so we knew we wanted to find somewhere nearby for the ceremony itself. We were really struggling with this as we found that most venues like you to have the ceremony and reception together. We were almost at the point of having a re-think, but after trawling the Council website for licensed venues, we found Harptree Court - just 10 minutes away - which was listed as new venue, having just received its licence in the New Year. We got on the phone to them straight away and as luck would have it, they were really happy to host our ceremony standalone. And when we realised that this was the place where the BBC filmed The Great British Bake Off, this was the icing on the cake. (Kate is renowned among her friends for her culinary excellence!) Of course it was only fitting to hold a Great Wedding Bake Off too.

With the venues sorted, we quickly lined up Papadeli in Clifton for the catering (we'd been to an amazing supper club and basically asked them to repeat the menu!) and booked a fantastic band we'd seen at a friend's wedding the year before.

There was of course a huge amount more detail, and Kate's mum and aunt got stuck into helping us plan and make all the other decorations. We tried to DIY as much as possible, to the point of ordering horrible old sacking, which had to be washed, ironed and stitched up to make the table runners. We also designed and made all invitations and stationery ourselves.

Everything came together on the Friday before the big day, as an army of family and friends took the day off to help us decorate The Old School Rooms and Harptree Court. Amazingly we were all done by 6, in time for a nice evening in the pub over the road.

BUDGET | £20k+ .... more than we'd wanted but it was worth it.

THE VENUE | Ceremony: Harptree Court, East Harptree.

Reception: The Old School Rooms, Chew Magna.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Designer: Suzanne Neville, from Carina Baverstock Couture, Bradford-on-Avon.

FINDING THE DRESS | Again, it was all too easy with Kate finding the dress on her first fitting. Kate went to check out Carina Baverstock's sample sale in the January, tried on a handful and knew instantly she'd found the perfect dress.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Again, the January sales coming up trumps! Suit, tie and shoes from Reiss, shirt from Hugo Boss.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Ed has played in a few bands over the years, so music was always going to be a big part of our wedding.

Kate walked into to an instrumental version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Never Going Back Again' - ironically this is a break-up song, but it's beautiful nonetheless. This was performed by Pete Cormack, a close friend of ours who also then supported Ed's band mates (Peter, Tom and Jimmy) who sung 'Something in the Way She Moves' by James Taylor and 'Blackbird' by The Beatles during the signing of the register.

Readings, Union, Robert Fulghum, The Key to Love, author unknown and For Now, Tracy Emin.

First dance: You Send Me, Aretha Franklin.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Sarah Coleridge, Jenny Williams and Rhian Hiles - all long-standing friends from Kate's time at Medical School. Rhian sadly couldn't be with us on the day, having just given birth to her first baby just days before.

THE FLOWERS | Flower design and arrangements by Pam Tingey, Kate's aunt. All flowers sourced wholesale from Bristol Flower Market.

THE CAKE | We didn't have a traditional cake, instead we had Papadeli's orange and almond cake for dessert. Each group of six shared a cake, which we cut together with our guests.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Kevin Belson. We met Kevin and Carol at a Wedding Fayre in Bath and instantly warmed to their down-to-earth approach. As neither of us particularly love the camera, we knew they'd be a calming influence on the day. They took some great pictures too, of course!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We aimed to decorate the Old School Rooms in a very rustic style. Lots of natural materials and autumnal colours.

We had a long, narrow hall so we laid our tables out banquet style. These were decorated simply with white table cloths, hessian table runners, lots of different-sized jam jars and candles, seasonal flowers and herbs. The other spaces were decorated with trailing ivy, old beer flagons with wheat sheafs, fairy lights... We also had an area with photos from our parents' and grand-parents' weddings, a play area for children and an outdoor courtyard with candles, paraffin torches etc.

THE HONEYMOON | We had a lovely week away in Dorset staying at Launceston Farm's Bothy. We'd had to spend a few days without the dog over the wedding weekend, so we made up for it with lots of long country walks.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | An emotional ceremony - lots of tears, but we got through it just about!

Being surprised by just how competitive our friends were over the bake off.

Driving ourselves to our reception in a red E-Type Jag - Ed's childhood dream fulfilled.

Impromptu sparklers for the band's last song.

Champagne and roll top baths at Hotel-du-Vin.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Decide what is most important to you for your wedding and try not to compromise in this area.
