Rockley Manor Homespun Fun Cricket & Fete Games Wedding

Rockley Manor Homespun Fun Cricket & Fete Games Wedding

via

Oh Phoebe and Edward, your gorgeous Summer wedding is all kinds of beautiful. What a pleasure it is to be sharing your story today.

On the 20 th June 2015 Phoebe and Edward said their vows to one another at Rockley Manor in Wiltshire followed by a splendid country barn reception. There were fete games and a match of cricket to entertain alongside live musicians.

They incorporated the things they love most, with crafty bicycle stationery, home baked cakes and reams of DIY bunting using meaningful fabric. Phoebe donned an elegant gown from David's Bridal and she looked so very gorgeous. While the boys wore blue suits with liberty print bow ties sewn by Phoebe, teamed with vibrant orange socks. Happy days.

Irene Yap, I cannot thank you enough for sharing your exquisite imagery today.

THE PROPOSAL | This is quite a story... On Saturday 7 th of December Edward told me he had to go to work. My response was to just roll over and go back to sleep (this wasn't a new thing working on the weekend). I woke up later to a message telling me to "meet me on the Southbank at 12. I'll be the one with the rose". I thought he was just trying to make up for the fact he'd had to work on the weekend. We had a lovely day. Wandering through the Christmas markets down to the first surprise of the day ... Ice skating at the tower of London. It turns out he had a day of old dates planned. We then get the boat up the river and were heading to Covent Garden to The Punch and Judy where we had had our very first date. This was rammed so we "spontaneously" jumped in a taxi that took us to my favourite hotel in London, The Charlotte Street Hotel. We were sat at the bar having a drink (another old date) when Edward excused himself for a moment. A while later a member of staff came over and asked me to come with them and I was taken up to the suite Edward had booked for us ... where he had snuck away to and got changed into his best suit and had champagne and roses waiting for us. He proposed and I obviously said yes ... with lots of tears! I hadn't planned for any of this when I was leaving home that morning so he had packed me an overnight bag with my favourite dress' and shoes to chose from. He brought all the jewellery he had given me as presents over the years and even bought me copies of my entire make up collection so I wouldn't have missed any of it over the days before. We stayed at the hotel that night and had breakfast there (another old date) before spending much of the days at London Zoo (another old date). To top off a perfect weekend Edward had enlisted the help of a friend to get all of our close friends together in our old 'local' to tell them the news on the Sunday evening. It was incredible!

THE VISION | We wanted to make the most of everything so actually found a venue we could stay at for the whole of the weekend with everyone in the wedding party. It was important to us we actually got to spend time with our friends and not just see people for a few moments on the day itself.

We wanted to have fun with it all and so came up with the idea of having the village fete games to play complete with our very own game of cricket. The look of everything was very important to me and I wanted everything to be as personal as possible so I decided to make as much of the decorations as possible.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Started as soon as we were engaged! It took a while to find the venue as we had some very clear ideas of what we wanted but once we had it booked everything fell in to place for how we wanted to the day look and feel.

THE VENUE | Rockley Manor, Wiltshire. I LOVED the fact they had filmed some of the Great British Bake Off master classes here I am such a big fan.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress David's Bridal, Necklace David's Dridal, earrings my Grandma's, headpiece Primark.

FINDING THE DRESS | This wasn't so smooth. I spent a fair amount of time in bridal shops on my own... Shift work does not allow for shopping trips at 'normal' times in the week so didn't have anyone to come with me. I bought a dress from Debenhams early on but it would have needed a lot of alterations to make it what I wanted and I didn't have the confidence to find someone to do this so I took it back. Eventually mum and I decided to start again and do things 'properly'. We got dressed up and went out to the appointments I'd booked criss-crossing London for a couple of days. This was the first dress I tried on the second day. I knew it felt right. I came out of the dressing room dancing. I was lucky; the length was right and I needed very little alterations. I bought some buttons and loops to be added to it by David's Bridal and also a sash from Amazon, which was turned into the bow at the back. One of my favourite things about the dress is that it had pockets!!!! My mum said our best man nearly fell of his seat in shock when during the ceremony I reached into my pocket to get a hanky when I started crying!

I had 2 pairs of shoes, heels from Rainbow Club and flats from No1 Jenny Packham at Debenhams.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | The groom's words... As a result of my work I where a suit everyday so wanted to make sure that it was special and a bit different from my work ware. After much research I landed on a tailors called Marc Wallace in Parson's Green, SW London, who offered a made to measure service but with some fantastic and slightly different fabrics. The suit was a blue fabric with matching double-breasted waistcoat. My best man also had a suit made in the same cloth but with a slightly different waistcoat to tell us apart. This was paired by a Liberty print bow tie hand made by Phoebe.

Having grown up in Northampton it was important that I had a pair of shoes from one of the great traditional cobblers, I landed on a pair of Chestnut Oxford brogues by Crockett and Jones.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had decided early on that we were going to break with tradition and each do our own speeches and not our parents but we still wanted them all to have a voice on the day. Each of our parents did a reading during our ceremony. They were quite varied! My dad wrote a piece called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to Marriage' inspired by one of our favourite series of books by Douglas Adams, Mum read part of the poem 'Life and Love' by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Edward's dad read 'Marriage Joins Two People in the Circle of It's Love' by Edmund O'Neil.

Edward's dad decided we needed to have a string quartet for the ceremony one night after a martini or two and we happily agreed! They were lovely and played a great mix of classic and contemporary pieces through the ceremony and also while people were playing the games on the lawn.

Late in the night we had the band The Jukeroxx Collective play. They got us dancing with a great mix of songs. A personal favourite was Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had 3 lovely bridesmaids; Edward's sister, Laura, and two more of my best friends Grace and Fiona. It was a fair task to get everyone together just to meet let alone try dresses on as again with two of us shift working, one working out of the country and endless other commitments! I was very lucky and found a dress I loved from Debenhams and thank goodness it suited them all! It fit in perfectly with the feel of the day with the vintage style lace top but was bright and fun and colourful too. The girls chose their own shoes and accessories but they all had matching flowers in their hair. The final touch were their belts which I covered in the same Liberty fabric I had made the boys bowties from.

THE FLOWERS | Robin's Flowers, Marlborough.

THE CAKE | All our cakes were made by our family. Victoria sponge (Mary, mother of the groom), lemon drizzle (Kate, bride's father's wife), fruit cake (Chris, mother of the bride) giant coconut cupcake (bride) and last but by no means least chocolate cake with coffee icing (Groom, who spent weeks practising icing).

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Irene Yap. An absolute dream to have around. We had an engagement shoot with her a few months before the wedding and I would recommend this to everyone. We were able to get to know each other and get comfortable around each other, which made the world of difference on the day, it felt more like having a friend take the photos rather than a stranger attending our wedding.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I wanted to be able to make a lot of the decorations myself. I'd spent ages looking at magazines, blogs and pintrest for ideas but finding out where to buys things and then finding their cost was huge!

I loved the idea of having lots of bunting on the day and so I set about making my own. It took me over a year to make it and didn't even end up using all that I had made! It looked fabulous in the hall. I collected fabric from friends and family. Some of the pieces have some lovely stories behind them... A friend's favourite (but ruined) shirt, cloth collected on a friend's trip to China 30 years before, napkins from my childhood and the first set of bedding Edward had to go to university. So many friends helped me with hours of sewing and ironing and it was well worth it. I've already had requests from friends to borrow some for their own wedding.

We wanted the day to be full of fun so in the time between the ceremony and dinner we had a number of games for people to play on the park in front of the house; croquet, boules, cricket and a couple of more traditional village fete games ... We borrowed the local village's Splat the Rat and my Dad made us the coconut shy. In fact as payment for loaning us the splat the rat for the day we have donated our coconut shy to the local village summer fete games collection.

I managed to make my mark on quite a few of the smaller details. Edward is a huge fan of cycling and so we needed to introduce that into the day. All the labels for the favours were hand stamped with bikes and all of our tables were named after placed we had been cycling together. The frames for the table names were bought in Poundland and then I sprayed them gold.

The bowties for Edward, the best man and the ushers were made by me. The fabric was bought in liberty and then I adapted the pattern they had on their craft blog to fit the boys. To match, Edward gave each Usher a pair of monogrammed orange socks. However, as his ushers were true Gents the socks needed to match this so were traditional Gentleman's long socks providing some very entertaining photos although they were a bit warm for a summer wedding.

The confetti was made up of dried petals collected from my mums garden and several of the bunches of flowers Edward had bought me in the year before the wedding. It was contained in boxes made by mum and I, which were decorated with ribbons.

Mum and I made favours in the week before the wedding; two flapjack hearts, another nod to Edwards cycling as flapjack is a favourite snack of his for long rides and he says it's the best thing I cook.

THE HONEYMOON | Still to come... 2 weeks touring the south island of New Zealand then 5 nights in Tahiti. But we did get a few days away after the wedding on our minimoon.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Edward is a keen brass player so wanted it included in day that his best man's fiancée was happy to oblige, even though the request came late and being 6 months pregnant. This was achieved by a trumpet fanfare welcoming us as we arrived to the wedding breakfast.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don't be afraid of making things yourself or with the help of friends, you'll be surprised at the hidden talents your friends have. It's never too early to start planning things but once you've got your vision stop buying magazines they will only confuse your ideas!

Although, a civil ceremony may not be everyone preference the ability to have all elements on site it allowed us to spend much more time with the people we loved.
