10 Ways to Make Life Lovely - the Final Days of February One

10 Ways to Make Life Lovely - the Final Days of February One

via

Good morning, wonderful people!

We made it! Friday is finally here and what better way to herald its arrival that with our final 10 Ways to Make Life Lovely for February 2016?!

In today's episode, we're all about enhancing our experience of life in these final days of February: making that bed that you snuggling into every cold Feb night even cosier, creating memories in printed ink rathe than just snapping a reel of selfies (remember those good old days!?)... We've got an artist profile for you, some new music and some of our top picks for warm-while-still-stylish coats to ensure you still get out on that daily hike in the cold!

So grab yourself a coffee (mine's iced, I know, 'at this time of year?!' well yup, I must be some sort of crazy?!) and wherever you are, kick back and take 10 minutes to make life a little lovelier...

So, after watching a rather well-known UK vlogger spontaneously take a trip to a cool little photo booth shop in Brighton lanes the other night, it got me to thinking...

Remember back in the day, when that was just a thing people did, like for fun? Couples on their second or third date would take home a strip of silly photos, maybe with a cheeky kissing shot, families and groups of girl friends would bundle themselves into the tiny booths and await their little strips of images...

We love it, we love the take home memento, we love the cute awkwardness of squeezing into the tiny booth, and that there's almost always one shot where no-one was ready for it!

Grab your nearest love and head to a photo booth next time you're out and about, it's sure to give you a giggle!

At the risk of sounding like a little old lady / Mary Poppins circa 1964... We're just loving feeding the birds at the moment.

I know this isn't a feasible suggestion for everyone, dependant on where you live, and if you have a garden, but in this super cold weather, when those little fellas need it most, it's such a lovely thing to do.

I love that it gets me out in the fresh morning air every day, it uses up and leftover bread we have and there's nothing quite like the sweet twittering and song of those little birds as they excitedly gather up whatever morsels you've left for them.

Channel your inner Mary Poppins, and feed the birds!

(Plus that chic little Bird Ball via Urban Outfitters?! Too cute, gimmie!)

Oh my goodness, you guys.

So, this month I have discovered the life-changing power of cushions when combined with pillows and a duvet... I mean, we've always had a couple of pillows of banging around in the bedroom, but this month I took it to the next level, and boy would I urge you to do the same!

(Unless you already struggle to leave you bed, 'cause this sure ain't gonna make it any easier!)

I believe the word I'm looking for is Plethora. Y'all need a plethora of cushions. Indulge in some big-ass ones for behind your pillows, then an assortment of super soft textured scatter cushions and it'll not only transform how gorgeous your bed looks on a daily basis, but the lounging potential is HUGE.

We LOVE.

All credit goes to a good friend of mine, one half of Chemikal Recipe, who threw this major tune into my lap...

(it's so awesome having friends with incredible music taste, I'm never without a jam!)

Meet Rosie Lowe, a 26 year old London-based musician, but she's no city girl. Rosie grew up in a wooden house built by her dad in Devon, one of six kids, without a TV and chopping their own wood to keep warm, and picking their own vegetables (ahhh, the dream!).

She's an open book. A believer in honesty and vulnerability, and we love that about her.

Have a listen to her feminist track, Woman, gives me all the feels!

A happy coincidence, I stumbled across this artist over on the awesome lifestyle blog HonestlyWTF just days ago and fell. in. love.

This is the work of Olaf Hajek, a German based artist who, as HonestlyWTF wrote, extracts 'elements from his worldly travels and his love of mythology, cultural traditions and different eras of art history [to create] ... wildly colorful and fantastical paintings. Each piece draws you in deeper and deeper with the intricate amount of detail, making all of us believers in his magic.'

If these don't brighten up a grey February day, I don't know what will!

...No not of the edible kind!

Although that would be good, right about now. I think I'd go for a vanilla glazed donut, with sprinkles, but the multi-coloured kind not the choc...

I digress!

We're talking baked beauty bargains, in the form of Milani's baked blushes.

Now, I must've bought this blusher for like 3 of my girl friends, but it was only recently that my oh-so-attentive beau surprised me with one and I got to experience the magic first hand... And I gotta tell ya, these blushes are bomb!

Super pigmented, one sweep of a brush over their gorgeously marbled dome will produce such a gorgeous flush and glow! They blend seamlessly, they cost under a fiver (say whaaaaaat!) on Amazon and, (especially in the shade Luminoso), they leave you looking like a goddess.

Get your bad self on board.

So, I don't know if this is a thing yet here in the UK, but I am all kinds of intrigued by the trend for health beverage, Kombucha, over in the US.

The origins of Kombucha have become lost in the mists of time. Thought to have originated in the Far East, probably China, it has been consumed there for at over two thousand years. It was known as "The Tea of Immortality".

So what is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea made by adding a culture of bacteria and yeast to a solution of tea, sugar and sometimes fruit juice and other flavorings. It's often referred to as "mushroom-tea" because during the brewing process the bacteria and yeast grow into a mass that resembles a mushroom cap.

The drink has a slight effervescence and sweet-tart flavor. It often has small remnants of the bacteria mix floating in it, which sounds unappealing but is not much different from finding some sediment in your wine. Kombucha is highly acidic, contains sugar, B vitamins and antioxidants, as well as some alcohol that results from the fermentation process. ( Washington Post)

Curiouser and curiouser, right?! There are very few brands producing Kombucha in the UK currently, as far as I can see, so I was super excited to discover this recipe on Free People's blog!

There's nothing like a health craze to keep things interesting hey?!

Oooph, it has been COLD these past few weeks, right?!

Now, I don't know about you, but I am a sucker when things get a bit chilly, and with the March Winds fast approaching, the temptation to go into hibernation is real!

But no! Don't let the cold stop you getting your fresh air fix. Get yourself kitted out with a functional coat that's like a wearing a duvet (I swear this was one of the best things anyone's ever bought me!) and never miss a hike or a run again

We are just loving North Face's Spring line, functional but stylish, those Spring time colours (or the chic black, of course) give us life!

Boy, am I a firm believer in that phrase.

As we head into Spring, y'all know it's time to get your cleaning game on, and what better place to start (and ease yourself into it!) than your bedroom.

A space of sanctuary, your little haven of tranquility, comfort and security... But #reallife, it doesn't always work out that way right?!

Start there, and start small, but little changes to your bedroom's organisation can make for a big impact, creating beautiful uncluttered spaces to help you unwind at the end of a long day, and wake up with a fresh, clear start too!

Last but not least, if you were one of those SUPER on-trend gals that got 'bangs' (aka a fringe, but I just love the American phrase for them!) back in the Autumn, you might be considering growing them out in anticipation of the Summer...

Well girl, if you've been worrying about that awkward growing out stage, do we have you covered? Of course we do.

Here's four totally bomb styles to help you gracefully grow out your locks...

One: the half top knot

If your fringe reaches past your eyes, you should be able to rock this one! Gather the top half of your hair, gentling pulling it back from your face using your hands (the more dishevelled the better, really) and secure into a bun on top, but towards the back of your head.

I'm not even growing out a fringe, and this is my go-to hairstyle right now!

Two: Braided to the side

A classic Sienna Miller style, carelessly section out your fringe and some of your full length hair from behind your fringe (to help carry the shorter hair) and french braid across the top of your head and down the side to your ear. Pin it in place, gently tease the plait out a little, and you're good to go!

We love this one for exercising, keeps everything outta the way!

Three: the centre braid

A little more structured that the half top knot, centre part your hair and then take a section 1 1/2″ either side of the parting and french braid backwards, away from your forehead, stopping at the crown and securing either with pins or into a little bun.

It's an edgy style, and a little bit 90s, but we adore it.

Four: Lazy day turban

For those days when anything else is too much effort, or your hair just won't play ball. Grab the nearest headband, or scarf and twist into a turban style headband, loosely pulling all you hair away from your face.

Super easy, a little bit hippy; it's our kind of vibe

Or, of course, you could just throw caution to the wind and keep the fringe! I'm kind wishing I'd had one cut in now...

And that's it you guys! Enjoy every second of this last February weekend and we'll see you on the flip side!

Peace + Love

Clare XO
