Here at Team MDC we’re always hunting for beauty inspiration, and nothing ignites our imagination more than Fashion Week. Going backstage to watch the pros craft the perfect look for each collection is simultaneously mesmerizing and enlightening, and we leave each show with a long list of tricks to try. To keep you informed on all of beauty’s latest we’ve been interviewing the artists, snapping photos and catching up with our fashion favorites at New York Fashion Week. Here’s the list of our favorite beauty trends for spring 2014. So, without further ado…

1. Sleek Ponytails

Slick, simple ponytails are staking major claim in next spring’s beauty agenda. From Jason Wu, to Altuzurra, to Victoria Beckham, sleek ponies have been ubiquitous this week, causing all of us averse to frequently washing our hair to let out an exasperated “thank you.”

To get the look created by Odile Gilbert at Jason Wu, prep damp hair with Kérastase Fibre Architecte and blow dry; apply Kérastase Gloss Appeal and flat iron in sections; create a deep middle part and pull hair back behind the ears at the nape of the neck to secure a ponytail at the back of the head; and finish with Kérastase Laque Couture to keep the style controlled and in place.

 

2. Matte Nails

Nail art is taking a turn for the subdued next spring, with an insurgence of matte, color-layered manicures hitting the runways of Alexander Wang, Veroncia Beard, and Costello Tagliapietra.

To get the look created by Michelle Saunders at Costello Tagliapietra, apply a single coat of three different polishes: first, essie Midnight Cami, secondly, essie Mademoiselle, and lastly, essie Matte About You. Applying a sheer polish over a dark color, brightens and pulls a different tone out of the original color, making your manicure more vibrant.

 

3. Minimalist Skin

As if in direct response to the bright blush and pops of color seen last spring, minimal face makeup made major waves this week. From Peter Som to Suno to Wes Gordon, a clean, minimally colored face was all the rage.

To get the look Alice Lane created at Wes Gordon, even your skin tone with Maybelline Fit Me Foundation, and apply Maybelline Baby Lips over your eyeshadow, for a dewy finish.

 

4. Undone Manes

A low maintenance hairstyle with major sex appeal? We know, it’s enough to make a girl wiggle with excitement, and it’s exactly what was served on the runways of Thakoon, Jill Stuart, Theyskens Theory and more.

To get the look, created by Odile Gilbert at Thakoon, create a side sweeping part on dry hair; apply Kérastase Mousse Bouffante throughout and blow dry it into the hair using your hands to twist sections as you go; spray Kérastase Laque Dentelle on random big sections and curl with a medium barrel curling iron in a downward direction to create loose, lived-in waves; apply Kérastase Powder Bluff to give hair a more matte texture and shake out the waves with hands to create movement; and spray hair with Kérastase Laque Dentelle to finish.

 

5. Statement Eyes

To complement the clean, minimalist skin that dominated runways, the eyes took center stage this week. Derek Lam, Jason Wu, and Sally LaPointe all showcased major eye makeup that will have us reaching for the glitter—and the colorful eyeshadows—next spring.

To get the look created by Diane Kendal at Jason Wu, apply eyeliner to emphasize the inner and outer corner of the eye, by lining very close to the lashes, up into the contour, and down. Next, blend the line with a brush, leaving the center of the eye clear. Follow up with a brown eyeshadow over the pencil, and then apply Lancôme Pro Glitter to the center of the lid. Finish with Lancôme Artliner close to the lashes, and Lancôme Hypônse Star Mascara on the lashes.
