Kate and Heath knew they didn't want anything too formal when it came to their wedding. "Heath grew up on a farm so we decided to pay homage to his childhood and create a rustic theme for our big day," Kate explains.

They incorporated red, navy and turquoise into their minimalist decor to complement the historic Calgary home the couple chose as our venue. "Having everyone in the city we have opted to call home was very special to us," Kate says. With most of Kate and Heath's family and friends living in British Columbia and Ontario, the couple decided to have a small and intimate celebration. "This gave us the opportunity to spend the day with each of our guests who had travelled so far," Kate smiles.

The couple placed red, blue and turquoise heart-shaped Kisii stones on their tables as a unique decoration. "Artisans in Kenya carved them, and we couldn't have been happier to support the artists behind these beautiful stones," Kate recalls. "They are now displayed in our kitchen."

Kate and Heath wanted to surprise their guests for their first dance. They had been taking dance lessons, but once they were centrestage the unexpected happened. "We got up there we couldn't do anything but improvise," Kate laughs. "We did our father-daughter and mother-son dances afterward, and then continued dancing the night away until 12 a.m.-it was perfect!"
